Life with a Halden

Fit it once. Forget it. Have the footage when it matters.

It comes on with the car and goes off with the car. Here is what changes the day you fit it.

A mum and her teenage daughter on the drive by the daughter's first car, the Halden Duo 4K behind the mirror
Peace of mind for their first car

Passed the test, first car on the drive, and you lie awake at night. It records every journey without them doing a thing, front and back.

No more her word against yours

The roundabout, the slip road, the car that pulled out. You have the clip with the reg on it, not a story the insurer splits down the middle.

At night and in the rain

Reads the number plate. Even at night, even in the rain.

Most dash cams look fine in daylight. Then it is dark, wet and the plate is a smear. This is the bit that matters.

At night in the rain, the Halden behind the rear-view mirror, its screen showing the car ahead with the number plate sharp and readable

The question everyone asks

Will parking mode flatten my car battery?

It is the number one worry, and the cheap ones earn it. Here is the straight answer.

The Halden Duo 4K behind the mirror on a bright summer day, screen on, sun on the windscreen
  1. 01
    It switches itself off first

The hardwire kit watches your car battery. If it drops low, it cuts the power to the camera, so there is always enough left to start the car in the morning.

  2. 02
No battery inside to swell or die

Most dash cams have a small lithium battery that swells on a hot dashboard and dies in a year or so. This one has a capacitor instead. Nothing to bulge, nothing to replace, and it works from -20 °C to 70 °C.

  3. 03
    Or skip parking mode

Plug it into the cigarette lighter socket instead. It records whenever the car is running and switches off when you do. You can add parking mode later.

Out of the box

Front and rear, fitted in twenty minutes. Recording before you pull off the drive.

No drill, no garage and nothing to buy. Here is the whole job, rear camera included.

  1. A hand pressing the Halden mount onto the windscreen behind the mirror013 minStick it behind the mirror

Wipe the glass, press on the static sticker and stick the mount on top, just behind the rear-view mirror. The camera clicks onto the mount and sits out of your eyeline.

  2. The trim tool tucking the thin cable into the edge of the roof lining027 minTuck the cable away

Push the cable into the gap at the edge of the roof lining with the trim tool in the box, down the side by the door seal, and plug it into the cigarette lighter socket. No cable hanging anywhere.

  3. The small Halden rear camera stuck inside the top of a hatchback rear window, its cable tucked into the roof lining0310 minFit the rear camera

Stick it inside the car at the top centre of the back window. Tuck its 6-metre cable along the roof lining to the front and plug it into the side of the camera. On a hatchback, the cable goes through the rubber gap at the hinge of the boot lid.

  4. The Halden screen lit up and recording front and rear as the car starts041 minStart the car

It is recording, front and back. Pair your phone in the app once and you are done. Fit the hardwire kit for parking mode later, or ask any auto electrician.

Stuck on your car? The quick-start guide is in the box, the online manual shows every step, and a real person answers any hour: tell us your make and model.

The rest of it

Watches the car when you are not in it. Sends the clip to your phone when you need it.

A car parked in a supermarket car park at night, the small Halden camera behind the mirror with its red recording light on

Parking mode

Someone hits your car in the car park. Now you will know who.

With the hardwire kit fitted, it keeps watch after you lock up. It films a frame a second while nothing happens, so the card does not fill up, and starts full recording the moment something bumps the car. That clip is locked, so it is never recorded over. No more coming back to a dent and no idea who did it.

Out of your way

No beeping, no nagging, no screen glowing at you at night.

Plenty of dash cams talk to you, beep at every speed camera and light up the windscreen after dark. This one sits behind the mirror where you cannot see it, the screen switches off after a minute, and it stays quiet unless you ask it something. You forget it is there, until the day you need the clip.

How it works

The AlwaysOn™ system: recording before you have pulled off the drive.

A dash cam only has one job: to be recording when it happens. Here is how the Halden makes sure of it.

  1. 01
    It starts with the car

No button to press and nothing to remember. The moment the ignition goes on, it is recording, front and back, and it switches off when you do. It records in a loop, so the newest footage is always there.

  2. 02
It locks the clip if something hits you

A bump or a sudden stop locks that clip, so it is never recorded over. Press one button to lock a clip yourself, for the car that cut you up.

  3. 03
It watches while you are parked

With the hardwire kit in, it keeps watch after you lock up and wakes the moment something bumps the car, then switches off before your car battery runs low.

Covered for two years, with 60 days to try it on your own car.

An auto electrician's view

An auto electrician explains why the Halden Duo 4K works

Nineteen years fitting dash cams and fixing the ones that went wrong. This is the one he tells people to buy.

An auto electrician in his van holding the Halden Duo 4K and its hardwire kit
Two jobs come through my van every week. A dash cam that flattened someone's battery, and a dash cam that wasn't recording when they needed it. The first is nearly always a cheap hardwire lead with no cut-off, or a camera with a lithium battery that has swollen in the summer. The second is usually a cheap card that has given up. The Halden sorts both. There is no battery inside to swell, the hardwire kit cuts the power before your car battery gets low, and it starts every single time the ignition goes on. Most people can do the basic fit themselves in twenty minutes. It's the one I tell people to buy.

No 50/50 this time

Bloke reversed into me at the lights, then told his insurer I'd gone into the back of him. I had the clip on my phone before I got home. Front got his reg, rear got him reversing. His insurer accepted it in a week. Last time this happened I got stuck with a 50/50.

For my daughter's first car

Our Ellie passed her test in August and I've not slept properly since. My husband fitted this in her Corsa on the Sunday. It comes on by itself when she starts the car, so there's nothing for her to remember. Best money I've spent this year.

Third ding this year

Came back to the supermarket car park to a dent in the door, third time this year. This time parking mode had it. Silver Astra, reg clear as anything. Sent it to my insurer and kept my no claims.

Even I can use it

Wife bought it for my birthday. I'm 67 and useless with gadgets, so I was dreading it. The lad next door had it fitted in twenty minutes and showed me the app once. I've not touched it since. It just comes on with the car.

Proper night footage

Hardwired it with the fuse taps in the box, about an hour with the rear cable run neatly. Night footage is properly good, plates readable under streetlights and in the rain. Took me two goes to pair the app the first time. Fine since, and the screen goes off so it's not lit up at night.

Fitted it myself

I'm not techy at all and did front and back myself in about twenty minutes. The little plastic tool pushes the wire into the roof lining so you can't see it. My dad came round to check my work and couldn't find anything to fix.

Common questions

Still deciding? Here are the questions drivers ask first.

No. The hardwire kit keeps an eye on your car battery. If the voltage drops low, it switches the camera off, so there is always enough left to start the car. If you would rather not use parking mode at all, plug it into the cigarette lighter socket instead. Then it records whenever the car is running and stops when you turn it off.
